Nami’s 2024 round up – our key successes from the last year

2024 has been a transformative year for Nami Surgical. From significant funding milestones and advances in product development to a growing team and a new headquarters, the company ends the year looking very different from where it started.

Here are some of Nami’s key achievements from 2024 – and the foundations the company looks forward to building on in 2025. 

Funding success 

In May, Nami successfully raised a total of £3.2 million through a combination of equity investment and non-dilutive funding. This included £700,000 through an Innovate UK grant, alongside £2.5 million in investment led by EOS Advisory and the Investment Fund for Scotland, managed by Maven, with participation from SIS Ventures.

Nami also secured a further Innovate UK grant in collaboration with the University of Bern. The £120,000 Innovate UK Switzerland CR&D project, “AMNIUS: Advancing Tissue Adaptivity with Additively Manufactured Nitinol Ultrasonic Transducers in Robot-Assisted Surgery,” will support further innovation in ultrasonic technology for robotic-assisted surgery.

Together, this funding has enabled Nami to accelerate its technology development, expand the team and invest in the facilities required to support the company’s next stage of growth. 

Advancing Nami’s Technology 

A major milestone in 2024 was the successful demonstration of Nami’s ultrasonic technology within a miniaturised scalpel form.

Miniaturisation is an important challenge for the integration of ultrasonic technology into increasingly small and dexterous robotic surgical platforms. Nami’s technology is being developed to overcome the size and flexibility limitations of conventional ultrasonic instruments while retaining the performance required for surgery.

During the year, Nami’s miniaturised ultrasonic scalpel demonstrated vessel-sealing and soft-tissue dissection capabilities, marking an important step in the development of the technology.

The company also reached another significant milestone, with Nami’s first UK patent progressing to the grant stage.

Growing the Nami team  

Nami welcomed ten new team members during 2024, bringing additional expertise and experience into the company at an important stage in its development.

New technical specialists have strengthened Nami’s product development and testing capabilities, while additional operational expertise is helping the company manage an increasing number of projects and workstreams.

Nami also strengthened its Board with the appointment of Albert Nicholl as Chair and Non-Executive Director. Albert brings extensive experience across Life Sciences and MedTech, including supporting early-stage businesses as they scale internationally.

His commercial, strategic and leadership experience is already providing valuable support as Nami prepares for its next phase of growth.

A new headquarters 

A growing team and expanding development programme also meant Nami needed more space.

During 2024, the company moved into a new headquarters in Hillington, Glasgow, providing increased space for the team alongside dedicated R&D and prototyping facilities.

The new facilities give Nami greater in-house capability to support rapid prototyping, product development and testing as its technology continues to progress  

Raising Nami’s profile

Nami’s progress throughout 2024 also attracted growing attention across the MedTech, robotic surgery and entrepreneurial communities, with the company and its technology featured in a range of industry and business publications.

Building awareness of Nami’s technology and its potential applications within robotic surgery will remain an important part of the company’s development as it builds new relationships and partnerships across the sector.

Looking ahead to 2025

From securing new investment and grant funding to expanding the team, opening a new headquarters and reaching important technical milestones, 2024 has laid strong foundations for Nami’s next stage of development.

None of these achievements would have been possible without the contribution of Nami’s team, partners, investors, collaborators and the organisations that have supported the company throughout the year.
