What inspired you to apply for an internship at Nami Surgical?
I’ve always been interested in MedTech, so the opportunity to work at an exciting and growing startup like Nami Surgical really appealed to me. I was excited by the prospect of working in a fast-paced environment where each week would bring new challenges and a variety of projects. I knew I’d have the opportunity to develop new skills while applying them to real-world engineering challenges.
What are you studying and how does this internship connect to your goals?
I’m going into my fourth year of a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow. This internship has complemented what I’ve been learning at university by showing me how engineering theory is applied in a real-world setting. I’m also interested in entrepreneurship and hope to start my own business in the future, so gaining insight into the day-to-day operations of a spin-out company has been an especially valuable part of the experience.
Can you describe your role and the team you’re working with?
Over the summer, I’ve been working with the Mechanical team. One of my main projects involved designing and modelling a housing for the ultrasonic scalpel casing. Alongside this, I’ve contributed to a range of CAD projects and taken part in various hands-on engineering tasks, including electronic measurements, soldering, laser etching, and component assembly and disassembly.
I’ve also been involved in several wet lab sessions, where I had the opportunity to see the devices being tested on porcine tissue, including the housing I designed. It was especially rewarding to see something I’d worked on integrated into the device and to observe the technology in action.
What has surprised you most about your experience so far?
One of the biggest surprises has been the company culture. Everyone is incredibly approachable and willing to help, regardless of role or seniority. It genuinely feels like a team working towards a shared goal, which creates a really positive and collaborative environment.
From a technical perspective, I’ve been surprised by how much iteration goes into designing even a relatively small component. I initially assumed the design process would be fairly straightforward, but I’ve learned that even small design changes can have a significant impact on other parts of the system. It’s given me a much greater appreciation for the level of problem-solving, attention to detail, and continuous refinement involved in engineering design.
