It’s been nothing short of a transformative year for Nami. We’re ending 2024 having achieved so many of our objectives for the year, with the business looking quite different now from how it looked in January.
Here are our key successes – the achievements we look forward to building on in 2025!
Funding success
In May this year, we successfully raised a total of £3.2 million in a combination of investment and non-dilutive funding. £700,000 of that amount came in the form of a grant from Innovate UK, with the remaining £2.5 million in investment led by Eos Advisory and the Investment Fund for Scotland, managed by Maven and SIS Ventures.
We then also secured a further grant from Innovate UK, in collaboration with the University of Bern. The £120,000 Innovate UK Switzerland CR&D Grant is titled “AMNIUS: Advancing Tissue Adaptivity with Additively Manufactured Nitinol Ultrasonic Transducers in Robot-Assisted Surgery”.
These funds have allowed Nami to go on to achieve the rest of this year’s successes – all of which take us significantly closer to our technology delivering better patient outcomes, across the globe.
Successful product development
This year, we successfully demonstrated our ultrasonic technology incorporated into a miniaturised scalpel for use in robotic-assisted surgeries. This is a gamechanger for the robotic surgery industry, as it overcomes the prior limitations in size and flexibility that have proved an obstacle for ultrasonics to be used in this setting.
Nami’s miniaturised ultrasonic scalpel has since proven has since demonstrated convincing vessel-sealing and soft-tissue dissecting functionality, and we are delighted to announce that our first UK patent has progressed to the grant stage.
Expanding our team
This year we have expanded our team by no less than ten new experts, each of whom will help Nami achieve growth and success in their own unique way. We’ve welcomed technical specialists to help us accelerate product development and testing, and operational support to assist us in streamlining the multitude of workstreams we’re currently working on.
We have also expanded our board by welcoming a new Chair and Non-executive Director, Albert Nicholl. Albert brings extensive experience in Life Sciences and Medtech, as well as experience of supporting early-stage businesses to scale globally. We are finding his expertise invaluable at both a strategic and operational level – and can’t thank him enough for his efforts this year.
Alongside Albert, we’re delighted to welcome Nikki Palfrey and Damian Mole as Non-Executive Directors. Nikki’s extensive experience in the medical device industry, including senior leadership roles and her current position as Chief Commercial Officer at Summit, brings a sharp commercial focus to our board. Damian, a liver and pancreas surgeon, translational scientist, and biotech entrepreneur, complements this with his groundbreaking work in discovering new drug targets and advancing clinical development at Kynos Therapeutics Ltd. Together, their combined expertise in commercial strategy, innovation, and industry collaboration strengthens our board’s ability to drive growth and deliver transformative solutions to patients worldwide.
A new, state-of-the-art HQ
With a bigger team and more work to do than ever – we needed more space with the right tools to facilitate our growth. We moved to our new Headquarters in Hillington, just outside of Glasgow, which comes complete with a state-of-the-art R&D prototyping lab. It’s everything we need to accelerate our product development and testing.
Raised profile
With so many developments happening throughout the year, Nami has also enjoyed coverage of our successes in various publications related to MedTech, robotic surgery, and entrepreneurship. We could not be happier that our work and technology is gaining recognition and we will continue to build awareness around the potential Nami has to revolutionise surgical procedures across the globe.
A huge thank you to our team, our partners, the various support organisations, and all who have assisted us this year. We could not have done it without this amazing network. Here’s to all that 2025 holds and ad Maiora, Nami Surgical!
