Working at Nami Surgical – meet some of the talented women behind the business

The month of March kicked off with International Women’s Day – a day to celebrate the achievements of women and recognise their efforts in all fields of industry.

In celebration of this and the many talented women on the Nami Surgical team, we wanted to provide some insight into what a working day looks like at Nami Surgical. It takes many diverse talents and skillsets to run a company like Nami, talents which the team have in abundance. We spoke to four of our team to learn what a typical working day involves, here at Nami.

Dr Rebecca Cleary – Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer

As Co-founder of Nami Surgical, Rebecca is a driving force behind the business, leading the team’s journey to market before scaling. More specifically, Rebecca is responsible for leading Nami’s technical and regulatory activities, as CTO. This means lots of time in the lab, assessing data, and liaising with the company’s Board of Directors to ensure the technological side of the business is in line with strategic priorities.

But like any founder of a business, Rebecca has to wear many hats – ditching her lab coat to also work alongside her Co-founder, Nico, on the business strategy, investment journey, and more practical elements of running a business. In short – one day can look very different from the next, but it’s all made easier with the support of a great team.

Rebecca commented:
“Co-founding a Medtech business isn’t the easiest role I’ve ever taken on – but it is extremely rewarding! Nico and I were both well-versed in ultrasonics as our area of research – but we’ve had to learn the business side of things.

It’s a mish mash of feelings – on one hand we’re so integrated with our technology and the level of understanding that comes with that, and on the other we’re navigating the journey to bring the technology to market – and all the other aspects that come with running and scaling a business.

Thankfully we now have a stellar team helping us on that journey!”

Kiara Walsh – Operations and Innovation Associate

As an Operations and Innovations Associate, Kiara works across many of the business’s functions – Quality, Clinical Studies, and Business Innovation – to ensure projects and wider operations run smoothly. Kiara will manage communication, oversee administrative tasks, prepare reports and protocols, and coordinate logistics for various events and visitors. She’ll also assist in the lab with clinical studies, collecting data, analysing results, and collaborating with colleagues to ensure continuous product improvement.

It’s a diverse role – but one that is integral to the smooth running of the company.

Kiara said:

“My day-to-day is an exciting blend of administrative work, innovation, and practical application – but one that gives me a holistic view of Nami’s entire operation, which is an exciting opportunity. Where different teams work on very distinct projects and areas, my work is multi-disciplinary – so no two days are ever the same!”

Jenny Ball – Product Development Manager

As a product development manager, Jenny’s day is a combination of project oversight, cross-functional collaboration, regulatory alignment – as Nami streamlines its Electronic Quality Management System (eQMS), and risk management.

A typical day for Jenny involves reviewing the project plan within the management software, assessing completed and upcoming tasks to ensure the team are on track with projected timelines. Jenny then collaborates with engineering and operations, gathering updates on tasks and recording key milestones.

With the implementation of the eQMS, Jenny is responsible for aligning Nami’s activities with quality and regulatory standards, ensuring that design and development processes – and ultimately the devices – are safe, efficient, and compliant.

When asked about her role, Jenny said:

“When it comes to what I do day to day – you could ask me again in a few weeks and I would give you a totally different answer. Every day at Nami brings new challenges, breakthroughs and opportunities, all while pushing the boundaries of innovative technology.

As a woman who has worked in medical device technology for seven years, I have seen my fair share of challenges navigating a male-dominated industry. But working at Nami has highlighted the significant strides being made by many talented women – and our wonderful wider team. Together, we’re bringing groundbreaking technology to the world.”

Magdalena Czech – Medical Application Engineer

Magda graduated the University of Glasgow – where Nami was founded – in 2024, with a First Class Honours Degree in Biomedical Engineering. With experience in ultrasound technology and biomedical innovation – she was a welcome addition to the team in January 2025.

As Medical Application Engineer, Magda is responsible for testing and evaluating Nami’s cutting-edge technology – technology that is set to revolutionise the robotic surgery industry. She spends a lot of time in the lab, evaluating the efficacy of the technology and how it performs, before collaborating with other team members to identify improvements.

Magda said of her day-to-day role:

“My studies have all been in a similar field – but there’s nothing that compares to seeing research applied in a real-life setting. Nami is a great example of how game-changing research can be and why it’s so important to nurture it into commercially viable technologies.

My focus is to make those technologies as high-performing as possible, working with the wider team to identify key improvements.”
